It’s been a while…

Indeed it has. I’ve been (and still am) busy studying, working and doing stuff, like social interaction with other members of the species homo sapiens - and studying for assignments. In the beginning of January I’ll have to hand in 3 assignments, Language and Culture (actually just anthropological linguistics), Methods of Linguistic Description and Theory of Science.

Language and Culture
I’ll try to reject the strongest version of Whorf’s theory of linguistic determinism based on studies of color terms in various languages - studies done by e.g. Berlin, Kay, Heider and of course Whorf himself. Going to be pretty interesting - and it’s always fun to criticise Whorf.
Methods of Linguistic Description
Not entirely sure what I’ll be doing here, but probably something computer-related. We’re allowed to do some sort of alternative project, so of course I’ll try to find something that involves some programming, as that is what I’m hoping to combine my linguistics with at some point.
Theory of Science
Based on Morton Winston’s Did a (Kuhnian) Scientific Revolution Occur to Linguistics? and Kuhn’s own works, I’m gonna write a discussion of the first-mentioned paper and my own view on the subject. Also something I’m actually looking forward to, as I really like Kuhn and (a lot of) his ideas.

So as you can understand, I’m busy, but in the good way - the really enjoyable way, actually. My blogging/coding/internet stand-still will probably last a while yet, but who cares, it’s not like anyone actually reads this crap anyway. :-p

Oh, I nearly forgot - a top [something]!
Top 3: Great Stuff

  1. Cowboy Bebop
  2. DJ Format (especially the 3 Feet Deep video)
  3. Last Life in the Universe

And now in Danish…

This Machine Kills FascistsNote: Most of this blog entry is in Danish, as it concerns the Danish music site MyMusic.dk and the users of it. So I’m going to start with a top 3 this time.

Top 3 stickers

  • The Finnish flag on the back of my Thinkpad
  • The “This Machine Kills Fascists” on “that guys” keyboard
  • Anything with Psyduck (Pokémon) on it

Oprop!

Downloads siden medio Dec. 2003

  • Migato Estalo Co.: 278 (Oggs: 258 / Mp3’s: 20)
  • Laxness 101: 683 (Oggs: 624 / Mp3’s: 59)
  • Anders K. Madsen: 1281 (Oggs: 1093 / Mp3’s: 188)

Hvorfor?

Gmail backup

Got the idea to use some of my 1GB at gmail account (which I only got to check it out anyway) to store backups of my mysql-db and most of the code on this server. Now I just need a way to automate this procedure, so I can make it backup via cron. It appears that gmail is becomming very popular - not only as a mail-service - but also as a backup/blog/you_name_it host. And indeed, the 1GB storage at gmail is certainly way more attractive than the 2MB of n^Hhotmail. Now we’ll just have to see how long gmail is going to put up with this alternative use of their webmail.

In other and totally irellavant news, my birthday is slowly sneaking up so I’ve put up a little wishlist (for my family to see, which is why it’s in Danish), but of course, I wouldn’t mind being surprised by a gift from an anonymous source (as long as it’s not ticking).

In even more unrelated (unrelated to what?) news, here’s a little top 5.
Top 5 cartoons

“Live free or don’t.”

Mmm… Eye Candy…

Just spent a couple of minutes shining up my desktop, turned out pretty much like this (image/png).

Eye Candy It’s actually nothing but PapuaWM, a couple of GKrellms, a gDesklets calendar and iDesk with some custom icons I made from an icon-set (Iconica) I got from themes.freshmeat.net. Since the set is under the GPL I intend to release the icons I’ve made from it later, when I’ve got more than four, but that might take a while, so don’t wait up.

ViewCVS to replace WebSVN

WebSVN was simply not efficient enough. It lacked a lot of features and such, so ViewCVS was the solution. The development version has native support for Subversion, so I spent a couple of minutes setting it up. Seems to work out fine.

You can access the repositories through URLs like: http://lillesvin.net/viewvc/dyndnsupdate, unfortunately I can’t seem to get the repository indexer to work at the moment, so the world will just have to know what it wants and put it after /viewcvs/ in the URL.

I wrote a little HowTo on setting up ViewCVS with Subversion support, you can find it in the Brainstorm sektion (NOTE: link removed), which I’ve setup for things such as this. :) (Go directly to the HowTo: http://lillesvin.linux.dk:8080/brainstorm/SetupViewcvsAndSubversion.html (NOTE: Wiki taken down.).)

Furthermore, all subversion repositories are now running through Apache2/WebDAV, so to make a checkout of e.g. dyndnsupdate you’ll should use:
svn co http://lillesvin.linux.dk:8080/svn/dyndnsupdate dyndnsupdate
