Too fresh to cope

Posted in MacOS X, Rant, Synfig on July 20th, 2007 by Steffen – 2 Comments

I was wanting to install X11 on Mac OS X, such that i could test the Synfig Studio port madsen [0] is cooking, as it depends on it. But was too slack to get out of the sofa (see pervius post; sofa’s are good for you) to go get the install dvd which holds X11, i though it would be just as easy and accurate to download the X11User.dmg from Apples site [1] which holds X11User.pkg and install X11 from there.

But no — check this picture:

x11 install error msg.
The error in the picture says, that I can not install X11, since there is a newer, fresher version installed already. While that might be partly true, it’s not the complete truth. It is partly true as i have some fresh Development Tools installed that among other things hold a bunch of X11 related stuff. But not the binary it self.

Wouldn’t one expect to get X11.app installed by installing exactly that packages? – It’s what I’ve done the last time I installed X11 (to run Gimp, on a previous install of on another HD before it hard died). But now the installer can’t cope with something being too fresh. I’m happy that it don’t downgrade my (developer) sources, but why on earth doesn’t it just skip that and install the binary.

The install dvd didn’t have the same problems as this installer – thankfully.

FUD by Association

I just saw an article on politiken.dk (a Danish newspaper) about a Valentine’s Day virus [da] apparently circulating. That, in itself, is nothing new — nor even unexpected, but along with the article they showed a picture of an old 12″ iBook. I guess the writers/editors just didn’t really think it all through, but the virus doesn’t run on OS X, but people will subconsciously make an association between a virus warning and the white Mac. And as a brand spanking new Mac-user, I’m against that.

I know it’s just a little thing and that it probably doesn’t really matter, but I do, none the less, think it’s a bit inconsiderate of Politiken.

Update (Sun, Feb. 18, 2007 15:49): As I said in the comments I actually mailed the author to mention it (not to whine or bitch about it) and today she sent me a nice and friendly reply and told me she wasn’t aware and that she’d try to keep such things in mind in the future. Apparently she’d had the same reaction from a lot of other readers. I guess the proper heading for this entry should have been Accidental FUD. Anyhow, it’s nice to know that you’re being taken seriously even though it was really just a silly little thing. :)

Hello MacBook

A thousand yays and cheers! I’m writing this from my brand spanking new MacBook (the white 2 GHz model) and I’m soooo enjoying it. Right now I’m still getting used to using it (eg. writing “@”) and configuring like hell… But I just love the Just Works™ feeling it’s got. Awesome!

Anyways, I’ll probably be looking into installing some Debian or Ubuntu on it at some point, but for now I just want to try out OS X.

Bye bye Thinkpad

Posted in Computers, Gear, Linux, MacOS X on January 29th, 2007 by Anders K. Madsen – 4 Comments

After some years of reasonably good service, my Thinkpad finally died. Fortunately it was kind enough to wait until I had turned in my paper (the only paper this semester). I guess it was inevitable… The battery had already died — and so had the cd-rom/dvd drive — and the hard drive was beginning to sound strange and act really weird, but in the end, it seems that it was the motherboard that actually got toasted. Repairing it will be way too expensive, so I’m opting for buying a MacBook, if possible. (I need my bank — or someone else — to lend me teh monies.)

I guess I was lucky that it died in the beginning of a semester, though I have to hand in my BA at the end of the semester, but at least it’s not ruining any exams for me just now. Maybe Murphy’s Law isn’t all that powerful against my Linux-powered Thinkpad…

I’m actually attending a semiotics symposium at the moment, so I better run now. Just wanted to let y’all know that I’m not exactly online for the time being, so if you need to get in touch with me before I get hold of one of those new computational devices, text me.

On Jabber

Posted in Computers, Lillesvin Networks, Linux, MacOS X, Software, Windows on February 3rd, 2005 by Anders K. Madsen – 7 Comments

Just registered myself a Jabber account, so now I can also be contacted via: madsen@jabber.org. Jabber is so much cooler than MSN/YIM/AIM and all the other clones, and the fact that one can setup ones own Jabber-server is pretty nice as well.. Perhaps a thing for Lillesvin some time in the future.

Well, I just wanted to say it and urge everyone to change to Jabber for instant messaging instead of those evil and closed (and let’s not forget ‘lousy’) protocols out there. So if you haven’t already tried it, give it a shot, who knows, you might like it… A lot… For Windows you could get Exodus or Gaim, for Linux you can use Gabber, Gossip or Gaim or one of the other millions of Jabber clients and finally, for the Mac users, iChat in OS X 10.4 (Tiger) will support Jabber, but until then, use Nitro or something.
