On Jabber
Just registered myself a Jabber account, so now I can also be contacted via: madsen@jabber.org. Jabber is so much cooler than MSN/YIM/AIM and all the other clones, and the fact that one can setup ones own Jabber-server is pretty nice as well.. Perhaps a thing for Lillesvin some time in the future.
Well, I just wanted to say it and urge everyone to change to Jabber for instant messaging instead of those evil and closed (and let’s not forget ‘lousy’) protocols out there. So if you haven’t already tried it, give it a shot, who knows, you might like it… A lot… For Windows you could get Exodus or Gaim, for Linux you can use Gabber, Gossip or Gaim or one of the other millions of Jabber clients and finally, for the Mac users, iChat in OS X 10.4 (Tiger) will support Jabber, but until then, use Nitro or something.

I know, but that doesn’t change the fact that Jabber rocks!

But, tell me, what is the reason to make yet another protocol when IRC works just fine?

Well, depends on your purpose… If you just want simple one-on-one chat with a friend every once in a while it IS a little much to use IRC, but there’s really no way of comparing the two protocols easilly, because they are so different.
In IRC you don’t have the whole contacts system, which I kind of like by Jabber, but on the other hand I like the “channel” concept of IRC, which is sort of implemented in Jabber, but not as powerful though.
I could probably find more examples, but I reckon you get my point by now…

The thing with giving up on something just because the other camp almost won, reminds me in a way of me young days. When win98beta came out, people were whacking off to the new IE, i ran netscape navigator because i believed in it. When i started to ran Linux, no one on the road where i lived knew what it was, heck, i actually think that except for my close friends no one in the city ever heard of it. When i started to use google, all the hype was on altavista(and it _was_ good at the time) So a friendly advise from one of the underdogs. Go for what you believe in, in a year or 2, perhaps everybody is boykotting google because it just got to big, like alot of reasonable people choose to do with hotmail, where are we going with gmail, yeah it’s cool to have 1gig for mail storage when it’s free, but what about the idea of searching for your mail? Perhaps it really sucks, we just didn’t find out yet …..
That was about my 2 (euro)cents
(by the way - FreeBSD rulez) :-)
