New phone and stuff

New phone and a mirror Ok, I bought this insanely nice Siemens CX65 a couple of days ago and it really is Insanely Nice[tm]. It has a way better calendar than the MC60 (my previous phone), way better address book, way better display (a little more than double the size of the MC60 approx.), way better interface, it has IrDA (the MC60 had neither IrDA or BlueTooth), it’s way faster and it was only a 3rd of the price I gave for the MC60 (99 DKK / ~$17.6 USD vs. 299 DKK / ~$53.2 USD (at todays exchange rates))… Nice? Yeah, definitely!

The camera actually takes usable (for web) and decent pictures. (Make your own impression from the pic.) I’m actually a bit impressed, though I miss a flash, but then again, it’s a phone, not an actual camera. If I wanted a real digicam I would have bought a such. (Yeah, right! I’m a student ffs!) Another cool thing about it is the fact that it has great theming support, so for now I’ve installed a Mac OS X-wannabe theme on it and it looks nice and smooth. Mmm…

Perhaps the nicest thing about it is the fact that I can actually mount it in my filesystem on my Debian box. Thanks to IrDA, SieFS and FUSE it was only “somewhat of a hassle” instead of “impossible”. Thanks guys! So now I can browse through my phones filesystem just as if I was browsing through my homedir on my laptop. ;-).

Setting up IrDA was perhaps the hardest part, and then again, not that hard now that I know what I should have done. I wish I could give a complete breakdown of the details for others with Linux/Siemens CX65 and perhaps I’ll try, but not now. I’ll have to prepare for the Grammatic Anyalysis exam I flunked last year. ;-) So, over and out.

nice pic, mistah, and good luck with the exam.

And btw where did you buy it? did you have to get a new phone number or contract? If yes, what is it?

And did you get my email regarding a gramma book?

I bought it at a Sonofon shop here in Ã…rhus and I had to renew my contract, so I bound myself for 6 months more at Sonofon.

    > And did you get my email regarding a gramma book?

Yeah, sorry for not answering it, I saw it and decided to think a little more before answering it and then I completely forgot about it.
I’ll answer it right away. :)

Did you use the ircomm-tty thing? What did you have to do on the phone to make it register?

  5. koala_man says:

Hey, waddayouknow, after starting, stopping, unloading, reloading and rerunning a few times, it all works. Should have known :)

  6. Madsen says:

Yeah, I used ircomm-tty. On the phone I just enabled IrDA and placed it it front of my computers IrDA port.
On the computer I loaded the proper modules (irda, irtty-sir, ircomm-tty – with modprobe) and ran `irattach /dev/ttyS1 -s`, which gave me /dev/ircomm0, which I could then mount with `mount -t siefs /dev/ircomm0 /mnt/phone`.

One stupid thing was that I forgot to check whether IrDA was enabled in my BIOS. It was not…

Depending on your setup you might have to “irattach” another device than /dev/ttyS1, which is the infrared serial thingy (on my system). But I’m sure you’ll figure that out.
