Comment spamming

Seems like I’ve fallen victim to comment spamming in this blog. Apparently 29 comments were posted from Sun, 26 Sep 2004 10:37:00 +0200 to Mon, 27 Sep 2004 11:36:43 +0200 all advertising stuff like online poker, diet pills and phentermine.

The comments have of course been removed and I’m now trying to think out an effective way to sort out that sort of crap. IP banning seems like the obvious solution, but then again, when does the same spammer strike twice from the same IP? Then I’m thinking of some way to route the comments through SpamAssassin before letting them through, but that’s a very abstract idea, since I have no clue whether or not this is at all possible.

Seeing how long it took me to notice this, you are encouraged to mail me if you encounter anything like this on this site, so I can get it removed and perhaps banned. Thank you.

    How annoying :-(

I don’t think SpamAssassin is the right way to go. It’s ok to use it for mails, but that’s mainly because there is nothing else one can do.
For a blog I would suggest either to require user registriation or go for image validation (you are asked to enter the word/phrase that is displayed in a fuzzy image).

Keep us posted on this issue, as we all are likely to run into the same problem.
