FUD by Association
I just saw an article on politiken.dk (a Danish newspaper) about a Valentine’s Day virus [da] apparently circulating. That, in itself, is nothing new — nor even unexpected, but along with the article they showed a picture of an old 12″ iBook. I guess the writers/editors just didn’t really think it all through, but the virus doesn’t run on OS X, but people will subconsciously make an association between a virus warning and the white Mac. And as a brand spanking new Mac-user, I’m against that.
I know it’s just a little thing and that it probably doesn’t really matter, but I do, none the less, think it’s a bit inconsiderate of Politiken.
Update (Sun, Feb. 18, 2007 15:49): As I said in the comments I actually mailed the author to mention it (not to whine or bitch about it) and today she sent me a nice and friendly reply and told me she wasn’t aware and that she’d try to keep such things in mind in the future. Apparently she’d had the same reaction from a lot of other readers. I guess the proper heading for this entry should have been Accidental FUD. Anyhow, it’s nice to know that you’re being taken seriously even though it was really just a silly little thing. :)

Did you tell them?
P.S. news and talk about that virus has bothered me more than the actual virus. Maybe it doesn’t exsist. Maybe the news about it is the real virus? ;-)

Yeah, I mailed the author — but it really IS a small thing.
The referenced article is the ONLY thing I’ve heard about it (except for when I looked it up in various virus-lists, to see if it really did run on OS X)…
But yeah, virus warnings in newspapers aren’t exactly geared towards us geeks. :)

So you’re a mac fanatic now? :-)

Hehe, well, not fanatic as such, but I like OS X — but on the other hand, I also like dpkg/apt-get and control in general a lot, which is even more apparent now than when I was just used to it… I really miss easy upgrading… As I’ve said in another comment, I’ll be blogging about my first weeks as a Mac-user sometime soon, because I actually do have a few issues with Mac/OS X…
