Bye bye Thinkpad

After some years of reasonably good service, my Thinkpad finally died. Fortunately it was kind enough to wait until I had turned in my paper (the only paper this semester). I guess it was inevitable… The battery had already died — and so had the cd-rom/dvd drive — and the hard drive was beginning to sound strange and act really weird, but in the end, it seems that it was the motherboard that actually got toasted. Repairing it will be way too expensive, so I’m opting for buying a MacBook, if possible. (I need my bank — or someone else — to lend me teh monies.)

I guess I was lucky that it died in the beginning of a semester, though I have to hand in my BA at the end of the semester, but at least it’s not ruining any exams for me just now. Maybe Murphy’s Law isn’t all that powerful against my Linux-powered Thinkpad…

I’m actually attending a semiotics symposium at the moment, so I better run now. Just wanted to let y’all know that I’m not exactly online for the time being, so if you need to get in touch with me before I get hold of one of those new computational devices, text me.

I guess you’ve learned that backups are a good thing? Just think what could have happened :-)

Well, I’ve got a backup, but the hard drive is still usable, so I guess I could dump in someone’s machine and then cram in some Linux live-cd and restore from that… But for now the backups are safe and sound on the lillesvin server and on my external hard drive. :)

Was fearing that you hadn’t learned from the Lillesvin incident ;-)

I had my crashes over the time. But I’m a really slow learner when it comes to backing up.

I’m still trying to figure out which way is the best to go - rather than just doing it and revise later.
